Performing Electrofishing Surveys:

Methodology: 

  1. Equipment Setup: Our electrofishing equipment consists of a boat-mounted generator, electrodes, control unit, and dip nets. We have several electrofishing boats of different sizes for all boat access scenarios. Our electrofishing boats are also equipped with sonar units capable of collecting data for generating bathymetric maps of your lake. 
  2. Electrical Field: An electric current is applied to the water, stunning fish within the electrical field generated at the front of our electrofishing boat. The size of this electrical field is heavily influenced by the conductivity of the water. Along with conductivity, water clarity, water temperature, water depths, weather conditions, and overall fish habitat all play a role in the success of an electrofishing survey.
  3. Capture and Analysis: Stunned fish are collected using dip nets, held in a live well, then identified, measured, and evaluated. Other services that we Aquatic Environmental Services, Inc. perform at this time are fish tagging, fish aging, largemouth bass DNA testing, and necropsies. 
  4. Data Recording: Detailed records of water quality, available fish habitat, aquatic weeds and algae present, fish species, fish sizes, and quantities are recorded for analysis. This data is used by the biologists at Aquatic Environmental Services to develop a customized management program to suit your goals for your water body. 

Insights from Electrofishing Surveys:

  1. Species Composition: Electrofishing surveys reveal the types of fish present in the water body, including both desirable and undesirable species.
  2. Population Density: By counting and measuring captured fish, our biologists are able to estimate population density and distribution, and predator to prey balance.
  3. Fish Health: Physical condition, growth rates, and prevalence of diseases or parasites are assessed through our electrofishing surveys.
  4. Habitat Quality: Fish habitat is evaluated during our electrofishing surveys. Everything from spawning areas, spawning substrate, travel corridors, loafing and ambush points for predators, to dense and protective cover for forage species. 
  5. Water Quality: During our electrofishing surveys, we can take a deep dive into the water quality of your lake or pond. Proper water quality provides the foundation for a fishery to be successful and thrive. Common parameters evaluated are pH, alkalinity, conductivity, and dissolved oxygen throughout the water column. Other parameters we recommend evaluating is the plankton and cyanobacteria community as well as nutrient testing.

Effects of Electrofishing on Fish:

Temporary Disruption: Electrofishing temporarily stuns fish but typically does not cause long-term harm. Fish recover quickly once removed from the electrical field, and they are released back into the water unharmed.
